How to Talk About Money With Your Clients (Without Feeling Icky)

If you're a holistic therapist, wellness coach, or energy worker, you probably went into this field because you wanted to help people. Not because you wanted to become a businesswoman. But here's the reality: at some point, you have to talk about money. You have to ask clients to pay for your services.

If you're anything like the practitioners I work with, that conversation makes you uncomfortable. Maybe you've undercharged for years. Maybe you give away free sessions to avoid the awkward conversation. Maybe you apologise when you talk about your prices. Or maybe you struggle with the guilt that comes with asking for payment, like you're being greedy or not spiritual enough.

Here's what I want to say first: that discomfort is real and it's understandable. But it doesn't have to stay that way. Your work is valuable. Your clients benefit. You deserve to be paid and there's a way to talk about it that feels authentic to you, without the 'ick.'

The Real Problem Isn't Money When practitioners say they feel uncomfortable talking about money, what they're usually really saying is: 'I don't believe I deserve it.' Or: 'I worry people will judge me for charging.' Or: 'I'm afraid of losing clients if I talk about price.' These aren't money problems. They're belief problems and once you shift the belief, the conversation shifts too. Your clients WANT to pay you. They want to invest in their own healing and growth. Charging for your work isn't greedy, it's professional. It's respectful. It's actually better for them.

Here's why: when people pay for something, they take it seriously. They show up differently. They get better results. Free clients often don't commit. Paid clients do. So when you charge, you're actually serving your clients better.

Three Ways to Talk About Money Confidently

  1. Lead with the value, not the price. Don't say: 'My sessions are £60.' Say: 'I work with clients who want to transform their relationship with stress and anxiety. After our sessions, they feel more grounded, clearer about their path forward and genuinely better. The investment is £60 per session.' Notice the difference? You're leading with what they GET, not what it costs.

  2. Get comfortable with silence. When you quote your price, stop talking. Don't fill the silence with apologies or justifications. Let them sit with it. Let them decide. Your job isn't to convince them. It's to tell them what you offer and what it costs. They'll decide if it's right for them.

  3. Normalise having conversations about money. Talk about pricing before they ask. Make it easy. Include your rates on your website. Mention them in your email. Don't make it weird by avoiding it. The more normal it is, the less icky it feels.

The Truth About Undercharging If you've been undercharging, it's affecting more than just your income. It's affecting your energy. When you undercharge, you resent the work. You feel depleted. You start to see clients as obligations instead of opportunities to help. When you charge what you're actually worth, everything shifts. You feel respected. You have energy. You actually show up better for clients. Your pricing isn't just about money. It's about boundaries. Respect. Sustainability.

Moving Forward Here's what I want you to know: you're not bad at business because you feel uncomfortable talking about money.

You just need permission and a different framework. Your work matters. Your clients need you and you deserve to be paid. Start with this: what do you actually believe about money? About charging? About your own worth? Because that belief is the foundation of everything.

Once you shift it, the conversation becomes easy. Natural. Authentic. That's selling without the ick.
