The Power of Word of Mouth: Why Marketing Your Business Differently
'The Power of Word of Mouth: Why Marketing Your Business Differently'
Make your work so good that people can't help but talk about it. This is first. Your client experience is your best marketing. If your sessions are powerful, if people feel genuinely better after working with you, they'll tell people. You don't even have to ask.
Make it easy for people to recommend you. Do you have an 'invite a friend' offer? Do you make it simple for happy clients to tell others about you? Oftentimes people WANT to refer you. You just have to give them an easy way to do it.
Actively recommend others. This is the part most people miss: you have to give referrals to get them. If you find a supplier you love, recommend them. If you know another practitioner who does great work, tell people. When you lift others up, they lift you up too.
Build partnerships. Find complementary businesses and create referral relationships. You refer your clients to them when it makes sense. They do the same. Everyone wins.
The Social Media Question
Does this mean you should quit social media? No.
But it does mean you should reframe what social media is FOR. Social media isn't primarily for getting clients.
It's for: → Building visibility → Establishing credibility → Creating a touchpoint with people who might refer you → Sharing your expertise → Staying top of mind.
It's supportive infrastructure, not your primary business builder. So instead of obsessing over engagement metrics and follower counts, focus on real relationship building. Show up authentically. Share genuinely. Engage with people you actually care about and watch what happens.
The Real Marketing Strategy
Here's what a real marketing strategy looks like for a wellness business:
Create consistently good client experiences.
Make it easy for satisfied clients to refer.
Build real relationships with other practitioners and businesses.
Show up authentically on social media (not for clients, but for visibility).
Actively refer others.
Nurture people who are interested through your email list.
That's it. Not complicated. Not expensive. Not exhausting. Just consistent, authentic, relational.
Moving Forward This week, think about your three best clients. How did they find you?
I'm guessing at least one came through a referral or recommendation. Now think about this: who do you currently refer to? Who do you actively recommend? Because that's where your energy should go. If you want more referrals, give more referrals. If you want word of mouth to work for you, become the person who makes word of mouth work for others.
That's the real marketing strategy.
