Your Business Should Serve Your Life, Not the Other Way Around

August 06, 20262 min read

I talk to so many wellbeing practitioners who built their businesses with beautiful intentions, to help people, to create something meaningful, to have more freedom. Then somewhere along the way, the business took over their lives. They're working more hours than they ever did at a job. They're answering emails at midnight. They're thinking about their business instead of sleeping. They're feeling guilty when they're not working. That's not what you signed up for. If this is you, I want you to know: you're not alone and more importantly, this can change.

The Business That Eats Your Life

When you love what you do, it's easy to blur the lines. A client reaches out at 9pm. Of course you answer, they need you. You have an idea for content at 10pm. Of course you create it, it's good. You wake up thinking about your business. Of course you do, it matters. But somewhere in all that 'of course,' you stopped having a life outside your business and that's not passion. That's unsustainable.

Here's the thing: your business exists because you want a life that works for you. That means enough income to feel secure. Time for people you love. Energy left at the end of the day. A sense of meaning and joy in the work. Not at the expense of all those other things.

What Does Service Actually Look Like?

A business that serves your life has clear edges. When you close at 5pm, you're closed. Not 'mostly closed.' Not 'unless it's urgent.' Closed. When you're with family, you're actually present. Your phone isn't in your pocket. Your mind isn't on your business. When you rest, you rest without guilt. Because you've set the container and you know you've done enough. This isn't laziness. This is design.

You get to structure your business in a way that works for you. Maybe that's working 3 days a week. Maybe that's taking August completely off. Maybe that's limiting sessions to certain times. Maybe that's having a waitlist instead of always being available. Maybe that's raising your rates so you see fewer clients for more money. The business that serves you is the one you get to design.

How to Start

This week, ask yourself: What would make my business feel good? Not impressive. Not big. But good. Sustainable. Aligned with how I actually want to live.

Then pick one small thing. One boundary that protects that feeling. Set it. Keep it. Notice how it feels.

This is the work we do in The Lounge. We figure out how to build businesses that don't cost us everything. Come join us.
