From Holistic Practitioner to Business Owner: The Mindset Shift Nobody Warns

You About

You trained for years to become brilliant at what you do. But at some point, most women in wellbeing hit a moment, sometimes gently, sometimes with a jolt, when they realise that being exceptional at their therapy is a different skill set entirely from running the business around it. In this post, Jennie Lichfield talks honestly about that transition and what it can look like to make it with confidence.

The Moment It Hits

For many women, there's a specific point at which they realise their qualification didn't quite prepare them for invoicing, marketing, pricing, follow up, or any of the other things that come with running a business. This isn't a failure of training, it's simply a gap that most programmes don't address and it's more common than you think.

What 'Thinking Like a Business Owner' Actually Means

It doesn't mean becoming corporate, money obsessed or less compassionate. In fact, the most grounded business owners are often more caring than ever, because they understand that a sustainable business is what allows them to keep showing up for the people who need them. It's a shift in perspective, not a change in personality.

The Commercial Mindset, in Plain English

Thinking commercially means understanding what's bringing in income, what's costing time, what's working and what isn't. It means making decisions from a clear, informed place rather than from fear or guilt. It means valuing your work appropriately, not from arrogance, but from an honest understanding of what you bring to the people you serve.

Adapting to Your Clients, Without Losing Yourself

Part of building a business is learning to meet your clients where they are. But there's an important distinction between adapting your approach and constantly underselling or undercharging yourself. You can be flexible and still have boundaries. You can refer when genuinely needed and back yourself when you're the right person for the job.

You're Allowed to Take This One Step at a Time

This shift doesn't happen overnight and it doesn't need to. The women who make it most sustainably are the ones who get the right support around them, community, guidance and a space to ask the questions they feel they should already know the answers to.

If you're somewhere in this transition right now, The Wellbeing Business Lounge was built for exactly this. Come and join a community of women who understand what you're navigating.
